What’s more, as the rooftop ecosystem mimics the wild spots still left in Malta, it will cost you much less to water than a ground-level garden and certainly much less than a lawn. That’s about 300 litre per square metre per year; for the first three years, as that’s how long it takes for the ecosystem to develop. After that, if you want you can turn it off!

Both the green roof and green wall systems help to protect your building from the outside temperatures. In the summer the plants actively cool by pulling the heat out of the building through an action similar to perspiration. In the winter their water content acts as an effective insulator, keeping the warmth inside.

Because this green roof is an ecosystem, from day 1 it attracts local butterflies, birds and provides fertile ground for wild plants to seed. In effect, your rooftop ecosystem is replacing the wild field your building is standing on and giving space to biodiversity to thrive and multiply. That’s not just to make you feel warm and fluffy…without thriving biodiversity, our climate will spiral out of control, our food will not be pollinated and the basis for our survival will disappear.

At 60kg per square metre when fully watered, it’s a feather weight compared to other available green roofs or plant pots. Our rule of thumb is: if you can safely walk on the roof, you can put our rooftop ecosystem on it without costly reinforcements

It gets better…it’s low to no maintenance! So no further costs and if you are a gardener, or like to cook, you can prune…or use the herbs in your cooking, to make herbal teas, tinctures, whatever you like!

Dust…a big issue if you are living near a building site. The more plants you have, the less airborne dust there will be, as it is caught up on the leaves and in the substrate of the ecosystem

Substrate, water and plants muffle outside noises so that your indoor environment is calmer and quieter.

This is an innovative building technique that dramatically increases the energy efficiency of buildings and their urban environment

If you have ever tried to drive through Malta during a rainstorm – or just after one, you will know about flooding. This green roof ecosystem and its green wall, hold all the rain that falls onto them (you don’t have to water when it rains…) and filters about half of it slowly to ground level, so it does not all arrive at street level at once. If you like, as the ecosystem is fully organic and natural, (so it filters and cleans the water passing through it) it can be directed into your well or even down to the water table.

Another bonus…this rooftop ecosystem and green wall are modular! This rooftop ecosystem and green roof come in pillows and panels, so you don’t have to do up all your roof or all your wall at once. It also means that if you are renting…you can take it with you when you leave and if you live in an apartment building and use the roof to hang up your washing, you can put a couple of pillows or wall panels up there to grow your herbs - or put them on your balcony to keep the mosquitos away in the summer.

And you will be doing good…Just 1 square metre of green roof absorbs 180kg of CO2 in one year. It also absorbs many other airborne pollutants, so the air you breath inside your home is cleaner and richer in oxygen. How many m2 would you need to offset the fuel you burn in your car, to heat or cool your home, to cook your dinner? It’s not about changing the way you live but making sure that you don’t have to…

Bonus, you get a cool roof you can use as a garden as most houses and apartments in Malta lack this luxury. You can cover part of your roof with the ecosystem and part with decking so you get to have barbecues with the rosemary growing at your feet.
